NO SMOKING‚ IN-ROOM POLICY IN KEEPING WITH GREEN‚ EFFORTS

GRENADA (Oct. 11, 2005)
In keeping with its environmental efforts to remain in the "green, Blue Horizons Garden Resort in Grenada has introduced a "no smoking in-room policy applicable to all 32 accommodations.  This new policy does not make Blue Horizons a „no smoking resort; guests can smoke on the patios or in any open-air space throughout the property.

"We instituted this policy in order to keep the air in our guest rooms clean and fresh, which is right in line with our efforts to enact green‚ measures throughout the property, said Arnold Hopkin, owner/manager of Blue Horizons Garden Resort, a Green Globe benchmarked hotel for its impressive environmental initiatives.

Blue Horizons re-opened in July 2005 following a $1.5 million refurbishment project.  The new interior and exterior color scheme of ivories, tans, and shades of green complemented by six acres of lush vegetation, colorful flowers and gently chirping birds creates a tranquil atmosphere that lets guests return to the softer side of nature in a delightful Caribbean paradise.

The resort features 32 spacious accommodations in superior studio and deluxe one-bedroom categories that come equipped with contemporary styled furnishings, air conditioning, ceiling fan, color cable television, telephone, CD player/clock radio, iron, ironing board, hairdryer, in-room safe and fully-outfitted kitchenette with refrigerator, stove, coffee maker and ample counter space.

Blue Horizons has long been associated with its gourmet restaurant La Belle Creole, a popular dining spot for guests staying at any hotel on the island.  Affording picturesque views of Grand Anse Beach and St. George‚s Harbour, La Belle Creole features continental cuisine with a West Indian flair.

A freshwater swimming pool, activities lounge (with color television, games and books) and poolside bar are centrally located.  At the front desk, guests can schedule off-property diversions such as deep-sea fishing, hiking, bird-watching, sunset cruises, sightseeing tours and other specialty excursions.

Beyond this, Blue Horizons and Grenada are an excellent combination for travelers interested in ecotourism.  Mix Blue‚s tremendous value with Grenada‚s lush interior, hiking trails of varying degree, waterfalls, the Grand Étang National Park and much more, and you have the ingredients for a unique Grenadian adventure.

Fantastic family value can also be found at Blue Horizons.  During the off-season, children under 18 stay for free when staying in deluxe accommodations with paying parents (maximum of two kids per room).  Kids under 12 years of age eat free from the children's menu with parents on the CP, MAP or all-inclusive meal plans.

GRENADA (July 15, 2005) Blue Horizons Garden Resort in Grenada emerged unscathed following Hurricane Emily, a category 1 storm that passed by the island yesterday, in the early morning hours.

Blue Horizons Garden Resort, which re-opened its doors in early July following a $1.5 million refurbishment, was not affected by the storm.

The southern section of the island including all major hotels, the international airport and Grand Anse Beach received little or no damage. All utilities including telephone service has been restored on the southern half of the island. Most businesses and shops are back in regular operation. The northern parishes of St. Andrew's and St. Patrick's sustained heavier damage along with Grenada's sister islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique.

BLUE HORIZONS GARDEN RESORT, TO RE-OPEN

JULY 5, 2005 FOLLOWING MAJOR REFURBISHMENT PROJECT

GRENADA (Feb.20, 2005)

Following a major US$1.2 million refurbishment project, the 32-room Blue Horizons Garden Resort in Grenada will re-open its doors on July 5, 2005 and present a significantly upgraded product for its guest base of divers, nature enthusiasts and travelers seeking a tropical destination at affordable prices.

Blue Horizons closed in September 2004 after Hurricane Ivan in order to make the necessary repairs as the resort sustained roof and water damage but no structural damage.

“While Hurricane Ivan was not a welcome visitor, we’re taking this opportunity to completely revitalize our resort product with brand new furnishings, a fresh and exciting color scheme, and select structural renovations to enhance the flow of the property,” said Arnold Hopkin, owner of Blue Horizons Garden Resort.

Following is an outline of the planned refurbishment:

  • All 32 rooms will be repainted with a new color scheme of green, cream and blue tones (reflective of the resort’s logo).
  • All 32 rooms will be completely refurbished with new roofing, colonial sash windows, contemporary style furnishings for the patios, living room/dining room/bedroom areas, colorful drapery, an entire replacement of all kitchen appliances including refrigerator, stove, coffee maker and toaster, and new fixtures and tiles in the bathrooms.
  • La Belle Creole, the resort’s signature gourmet restaurant, will be entirely redesigned with a new roof, concrete floor and arches, and elegant furnishings, while still affording spectacular views from the hills.
  • The bar and lounge will be re-roofed.
  • An impressive hotel entrance will be created, and the Manager’s and Front Offices will be renovated with extensions to incorporate parapet walls to the roofs of these buildings (parapet walls are concrete extensions which usually on appearance make the roof of a building invisible).  All windows in these buildings will also be replaced.

“While the resort will have a new spruced-up look, it will retain the charming character, informal appeal and picturesque surroundings that have made it a success for over 25 years,” said Hopkin.

All design and furnishings will be sourced and handled by Kobi Karp Architecture Interior Design Planning in Miami, FL.

Blue Horizons is located four miles north of the airport and less than five miles from the capital city of St. George’s.

BLUE HORIZONS, GRENADA, UNVEILS NEW NAME, NEW LOGO TO EMPHASIZE ITS ‘NATURE’:  BLUE HORIZONS GARDEN RESORT

To better reflect its true “nature” with an emphasis on being an environmentally-friendly property set in lush, colorful surroundings, Blue Horizons Cottage Hotel in Grenada has been renamed Blue Horizons Garden Resort

Along with the name change, our resort will unveil a new logo (incorporating a leaf, flower and bird) and video (which will be placed on our Web site) to support the revamped image.

“Renaming our property Blue Horizons Garden Resort more accurately portrays our exceptional location, our vacation experience, and our commitment to environment practices,” .

“We’re in close proximity to magnificent Grand Anse Beach – just 200 yards, which is actually a lesser distance than if you stayed in certain sprawling properties – but our strength is our natural surroundings highlighted by a diverse assortment of tropical flowers including oleander, buttercups and bougainvillea, and 21 different species of tropical birds inhabiting the grounds,” .

“Over the past few years, we’ve carved a successful niche for ourselves with divers, adventure travelers and nature lovers who are looking for a charming, informal tropical getaway complemented by affordable accommodations and truly world-class dining,” .

The new name change comes on the heels of Blue Horizons Garden Resort achieving successful completion of the Green Globe 21 Benchmarking process, which means the property can now proceed to the next step – securing the coveted Green Globe 21 Certification.

“Going forward with the Green Globe process demonstrates our commitment to the environment and the type of resort we want Blue Horizons to be so we are really driven with the strongest motivation to preserve what makes us distinct,” .

BLUE HORIZONS GARDEN RESORT, GRENADA,
ACHIEVES GREEN GLOBE 21 BENCHMARK DISTINCTION

The 32-room Blue Horizons Garden Resort in Grenada has achieved successful completion of the Green Globe 21 Benchmarking process, which means the property can now proceed to the next step – securing the coveted Green Globe 21 Certification.  Blue Horizons becomes the second resort on Grenada, behind its sister property Spice Island Beach Resort, to achieve this distinction.

A recent step introduced to Green Globe 21 Certification by Green Globe Asia Pacific, Benchmarking is a means by which the operation can assess and improve its environmental performance.  Benchmarking uses the 10 key environmental performance areas identified in the Green Globe 21 Standard.  This Benchmarking requires the submission of information over a 12-month period about the operation’s environmental and social sustainability performance against a number of indicators such as energy and water consumption, etc.  Provided that the operation achieves better than the Benchmarks set for its sector, the operation can proceed to Certification.

“We are extremely committed to sustaining the environment because we recognize that our pristine surroundings are what distinguish us and make us a truly special place to vacation. It is also a testament to our exceptional staff for being proactive in establishing and maintaining sound environmental practices.”

“Operating an environmentally-conscious property is a way of life for us at Blue Horizons, and we look forward to initiating additional sustainable practices as we seek Green Globe Certification.”

Following are examples of environmental practices instituted at Blue Horizons Garden Resort that paved the way for the property achieving the Green Globe Benchmark distinction:

  • Creation of a fully-organic composting heap
  • Introduction of water-saving toilets in 100 percent of the rooms
  • Introduction of energy-saving air-conditioners in 60 percent of the rooms
  • Installation of solar water heating systems in 55 percent of the rooms
  • Placement of energy-savings bulbs in 98 percent of the hotel
  • Installation of an Ozonator in the pool to minimize the amount of chlorine used
  • Use of ECOLAB environmentally-friendly chemicals in the housekeeping department
  • Creation of more garden beds above existing soil so plants can thrive
  • Planting of more drought-resistant flora such as bougainvillea, buttercup and oleander so less water is used particularly during the dry season
  • Guest involvement in various capacities – establishment of a towel reuse program, asking guests to separate garbage into appropriate bins (instructions provided in all rooms), and requesting that they turn off the air-conditioner when leaving rooms
  • Staff training program in every department to ensure the highest possible health and hygiene standards
  • Recycling of paper in the front and back offices
